Hey, did you make that simple budget yesterday?
Speaker:Awesome.
Speaker:But maybe you're already thinking, how on earth do I actually stick to these
Speaker:numbers, especially in certain areas.
Speaker:Well, today we're pulling out a super old school trick that really works.
Speaker:Hello again and welcome back to Ask Ralph your daily spot for faith-based
Speaker:financial guidance, always with the goal of helping you break that cycle of
Speaker:financial shame and do it with confidence.
Speaker:I'm Ralph, and it's great to have you here as we continue our series,
Speaker:the Joy of Living Below Your Means.
Speaker:We're building layer upon layer here.
Speaker:So you've got a budget, fantastic, but maybe reality is already setting in.
Speaker:You look at that number for say, groceries or maybe it's eating out
Speaker:or, or maybe your fun money category.
Speaker:And you know from experience that it's really easy to blow past that
Speaker:amount without even noticing it.
Speaker:Swiping that debit or credit card feels almost invisible sometimes, doesn't it?
Speaker:One little purchase here, another there, and suddenly you've overspent
Speaker:and the budget feels broken already.
Speaker:That frustration of, of knowing your budget number, but finding it
Speaker:incredibly hard to stick to it in certain variable spending areas.
Speaker:That disconnect between the plan and reality is the single pain
Speaker:point that we're hitting today.
Speaker:Here's the thing, plastic makes spending easy.
Speaker:Maybe really too easy, doesn't feel like real money leaving your hand.
Speaker:And this convenience can work against our efforts towards discipline
Speaker:and self-control, which the Bible calls fruits of the spirit.
Speaker:That's in Galatians chapter five.
Speaker:Sometimes we need practical strategies.
Speaker:We need tangible methods to help us exercise that self-control
Speaker:and be faithful with the plan that God has helped us create.
Speaker:It's about putting practical guardrails in place where we know we tend to struggle.
Speaker:So how do we bridge that gap between our budget plan and our
Speaker:actual spending habits, especially in those tricky categories?
Speaker:Well, lemme just tell you the single surprisingly effective solution is to
Speaker:try the cash envelope system for just one challenging category of your budget.
Speaker:This is beautifully simple.
Speaker:You decide how much you plan to spend in a specific category.
Speaker:Maybe that's groceries or restaurants or coffee, maybe entertainment.
Speaker:And then you pick a set period of time, like a week or, or maybe it's
Speaker:until your next paycheck, and then you withdraw that exact amount of cash.
Speaker:You put it in a labeled envelope, and that's all you spend in that category.
Speaker:When the cash is gone, it's gone until the next period.
Speaker:So I bet you're asking Ralph, why does this old school method work so well?
Speaker:Well, let me tell you why.
Speaker:First, it's tangible.
Speaker:Handing over physical cash makes spending feel real.
Speaker:Again.
Speaker:You see the money decreasing in that envelope.
Speaker:Second thing, it's visual.
Speaker:You can quickly see how much you have left in the envelope.
Speaker:Third thing, it's self-limiting.
Speaker:It automatically stops you from overspending in that category.
Speaker:And fourth.
Speaker:It builds discipline.
Speaker:It forces you to be more mindful and make choices within your limit.
Speaker:The solution is really tangible control.
Speaker:Use cash for one category,
Speaker:so you're ready for one action step today.
Speaker:It takes just a few minutes to set this up and let's go
Speaker:through those steps right now.
Speaker:First thing I want you to do, number one, pick just one category.
Speaker:Look at your budget and choose one variable spending category
Speaker:where you consistently overspend or find it hard to track.
Speaker:Maybe for you that's groceries, maybe it's eating out.
Speaker:Maybe it's those coffee shop runs.
Speaker:Maybe it's fun money.
Speaker:Maybe you love to buy clothing.
Speaker:Just pick one to start.
Speaker:Second thing.
Speaker:Number two, you're gonna label an envelope.
Speaker:Get a regular envelope and just write the category name and the budgeted
Speaker:dollar amount for your chosen period.
Speaker:For example, let's say you're doing this for groceries and you just
Speaker:write on that groceries, $150 this week, or maybe it's eating out, you
Speaker:write a hundred dollars per paycheck.
Speaker:Number three, you get the cash.
Speaker:So next time you get paid or you, you go to the bank, you withdraw
Speaker:that exact amount of cash.
Speaker:It's really that simple.
Speaker:And then number four, you stuff that envelope put cash
Speaker:in, its labeled envelope.
Speaker:And last but not least, number five, you spend only from that envelope.
Speaker:Starting now for that category only pay using only the cash from that envelope.
Speaker:Leave your cards in your wallet for those other purchases.
Speaker:When the envelope system is empty, it's pretty simple.
Speaker:You stop spending in that category until you refill it next week or
Speaker:whatever that next cycle is for you.
Speaker:Maybe it's your next payday.
Speaker:So I bet you're thinking, Ralph, why do I do this?
Speaker:And I'm gonna tell you why.
Speaker:Because it directly fights that pain of easily overspending with
Speaker:plastic in that chosen problem area.
Speaker:It makes your budget number, and I'm gonna give you two terms I like to use here.
Speaker:It makes your budget number real and it makes it visible.
Speaker:It forces you to pause and think before spending, giving you immediate concrete
Speaker:control over that one tricky category.
Speaker:Let's pray together.
Speaker:Father God, thank you for your practical wisdom.
Speaker:Lord, we confess that sometimes discipline is hard, especially
Speaker:when spending is so easy.
Speaker:I pray for my friend listening as they choose that one category
Speaker:to manage with cash today.
Speaker:Lord, give them the resolve to set it up and the self-control to stick with it.
Speaker:Father, help this simple, tangible method be a tool that builds their
Speaker:financial discipline and brings their spending in this area back
Speaker:into alignment with their plan.
Speaker:May it bring peace and a sense of accomplishment.
Speaker:Thank you so much for your patience with us and your help,
Speaker:and we ask this in Jesus' name.
Speaker:Amen.
Speaker:Alright, well give it a shot.
Speaker:Pick that one category, get your envelope ready, and try the cash system.
Speaker:I'm thinking it might feel weird at first, but many people find it incredibly
Speaker:empowering for gaining control.
Speaker:Now, speaking of categories where spending can get tricky.
Speaker:Food is often a big one, so be sure to join me back here tomorrow.
Speaker:On as gr we're gonna discuss a key strategy to get a better handle on
Speaker:both grocery cost and eating out.
Speaker:I'm gonna share my secret for success on tomorrow's show.
Speaker:If this cash envelope idea, click for you.
Speaker:I want you to do me a favor and share this with somebody else because I'm
Speaker:sure someone else could really benefit from using the envelope system as well.
Speaker:Now, I'm gonna encourage you also find resources and links in the show
Speaker:notes and visit me@askralph.com.
Speaker:So until tomorrow, exercise that self-control and keep seeking him first.
Speaker:Stay financially savvy and God bless you.
Speaker:Have a great day.
