Welcome to the ask Ralph podcast, where listening to an experienced financial professional can help you make sense of confusing questions, [00:01:00] current headlines, and industry trends about taxes.

Small business, financial decision making, investment strategies, and even the art of proper budgeting. As Ralph makes the complex simple by sharing his real world knowledge with all things financial. Now here's your host, Ralph Estep, Jr.

As small business owners, it's easy to get caught up in the relentless pursuit of outdoing our competitors, find myself in the same position all the time.

We often find ourselves constantly analyzing what they're doing. And we try to replicate their strategies. However, this approach can quickly drain our motivation and steer us away from our true strengths. So the question is, how do we find motivation in our small businesses? Truth is, the answer lies in understanding and harnessing our core competencies.

Now that's a big word. So let's start by asking ourselves a simple question. What are core competencies?[00:02:00] Core competencies are the unique strengths and skills and resources that set our businesses apart from the competition. They are the foundation upon which our success is built. By focusing on these core competencies, we can create a strong sense of purpose and drive that will propel us forward.

I'll use myself as an example in my business at Saggio Accounting Plus. Our core competency lies in providing top notch accounting services to individuals and small businesses. That's what we do. We've built a team of highly skilled professionals who are experts in the field of finance and taxation.

It's this focus on our core competency that has allowed us to establish ourselves as a trusted partner for our clients and consistently deliver them exceptional results. So the first step in finding motivation through core competencies is self reflection. This is the hard work, folks. This is what you have to do.

Reflect. Take some time to evaluate your business and [00:03:00] identify what you do best. What are the unique skills and strengths that differentiate you from others in your industry? I have this very discussion with many clients. They come in to meet with me, as as often as they can, and sometimes we'll have a discussion about they'll say to me Ralph, I'm going to go down another avenue.

I'm going to try this particular thing in my business. And I always asked them don't let it take away from your core competencies. So the question is, are you known for excellent customer service? Innovative product design, or efficient operations? Write down these core competencies, remind yourself of them regularly.

And maybe it's something you put on an index card and you look at every morning. Once you've identified your core competencies, it's time to align your business strategy with them. How do you do that, Ralph? Well, it's pretty simple. This means making intentional choices about the products or services you offer.

The markets you target and the customers you serve. By focusing on what you do [00:04:00] best, you can deliver unrivaled value to your customers and build a reputation that will attract more business. Now, some of you may be wondering, but Ralph, what about the competition? Shouldn't we be keeping an eye on what they're doing?

I agree, yeah. While it's important to stay informed, constantly comparing yourself to others can be counterproductive. Instead of trying to imitate or outdo your competitors, focus on being the best version of yourself. By cultivating your core competencies, you will naturally differentiate yourself from the competition.

That's going to lead to you attracting more customers who appreciate your unique offerings. That's the key to this. What is your uniqueness? Another crucial aspect of finding motivation through core competencies is continuous improvement. I can't stress this enough. Once you've identified your strengths, don't rest on your laurels.

Invest in honing and expanding your skills. It's so easy to stop doing that. It's so easy to [00:05:00] get complacent. You need to stay up to date with industry trends and seek out opportunities for growth. By constantly pushing the boundaries of what you can achieve with your core competencies, you will not only stay motivated, but also stay ahead of the competition.

So let's use my business as an example. Again, we're constantly striving for excellence. We do that by regularly participating in professional development programs, attending industry conferences, and engaging in ongoing education to ensure that we stay at the forefront of our field. This commitment to continuous improvement.

Not only keeps us motivated, but also ensures that we provide the highest level of service to our clients. Surrounding yourself with a supportive network is also crucial in finding motivation through core competencies. You can't do this alone. You need to surround yourself With other successful business people, connect with fellow entrepreneurs, industry experts, and mentors who can provide guidance and inspiration, share your [00:06:00] experience with them, learn from others and collaborate on projects that leverage your core competencies.

Folks, building a strong network will not only fuel your motivation, but also open doors to new opportunities and partnerships. Remember this, finding motivation through core competency is not about complacency or ignoring the competition. It's about understanding your unique strengths, aligning your business strategy with them, and continuously improving within those areas.

When you focus on what you do best, you not only find motivation, but also create a sustainable competitive advantage that sets you apart in the marketplace. And the truth is that's what we're all looking for. Before we wrap up today's episode, I want to leave you a few actionable steps you can take. You can remember this by, remember the word rain, R A I N.

And the first thing in rain is reflect. That's the R. Take time to identify your core and remind yourself of them regularly. Write those core competencies down. The next letter is [00:07:00] A. Align. Evaluate your business strategy and ensure that it's aligned with your core competencies. The next letter is I.

Improve. Invest in continuous learning and improvement within your core competencies. And the last letter is N, Network. Surround yourself with a supportive network of fellow entrepreneurs and industry experts. Again, that's RAIN, reflect, align, improve, and network. By following these steps, you'll be on your way to finding motivation and success in your small business.

I hope you enjoyed today's episode. That's all the time we have for today. I hope you found this discussion on finding motivation through core competencies helpful and inspiring.
